Onyx & Lazul

Onyx and Lazul is an exploration of material displacement. In this work, the traditional hierarchy of layering is inverted; rather than adding light over dark, a viscous black “Onyx” top-layer is chemically excavated using a varnish-reductive technique. This process reveals a hidden substrate of wet-on-wet Ultramarine and Titanium White. The result is a high-contrast composition where the gloss of the “remover” becomes a permanent architectural element of the piece, blurring the line between the void and the celestial.
